What
kind of Web Sites can join the ARRL Great Lakes Division WebRing?
Any Amateur
Radio related pages, provided they deal with Amateur Radio affairs
in the ARRL Great Lakes Division. This includes the states
of Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio. Clubs, ARES, RACES, Nets,
Personal Pages, Dealers, Equipment Suppliers, Software Suppliers,
and any other Amateur Radio related Organizations are invited
and encourage to join. I do not accept adult sites or
any kind of site that may be offensive to the general public
or Amateur Radio. I reserve the right to decide who can become
part of the ARRL Great Lakes Division WebRing.
I'd
like to join the WebRing, but I didn't make my Web Site. How
can I join?
The company or designer that did create your site
can be notified that you'd like to join the WebRing for exposure
to the Amateur Radio Community. Contact them, give them
the ARRL Great Lakes Division WebRing address of http://www.MrRace.Com/ARRL/,
and tell them you'd like to join. They can have you added just
that easily - there is nothing special needed to join and there
is no cost for you to participate in the WebRing. You also have
password access to edit your site's information and you can remove your site from the WebRing at any time.
Why
hasn't my site been added?
There are several reasons as to why your site has
not been added yet:
- I have not had the
time to make it happen.
- The WebRing code is
nowhere to be found on your site.
- The WebRing code has
errors and does not work.
- You have altered the
Division WebRing graphics in some way or they have been
omitted from the code.
- You are not a Business
or Organization located in the ARRL Great Lakes Division.
- The WebRing points
to a page with no ARRL Great Lakes Division WebRing code.
- Your page refuses
to load properly and thus the Division WebRing cannot be
found.
- You have entered an
incorrect URL for your site.
You will be notified by
email if any of the above are a problem.
Do
I have to physically be in Kentucky, Michigan, or Ohio to join?
Yes. Your site must pertain
to a ARRL Great Lakes Division Individual or Group which is
located in Kentucky, Michigan, or Ohio. However, if for example
the Club you work with is located in our Division but Membership
and Web Page items deal with a State adjacent to yours - that
is O.K. as your Club has a Great Lakes Division address. Commercial
Web sites involving businesses must be physically located in
the Division. The sole purpose of our WebRing is to bring Great
Lakes Division Amateurs together in such a way as to bring additional
visitors to our sites by cooperatively being linked together.
If your site reflects an address outside of our Division, but
you think it has a lot of interest within the Division, let
me know. I may be willing to bend the rules, providing
you put forth a convincing argument.
Does
the WebRing HTML code have to be on the first page of my site?
No, not
necessarily. I require that you register the URL of the page
containing the code. I do suggest that code be on the first
page of your Web Site as generally that is where visitors can
get an overview about the products, services and information
that your company, organization, or group offers. Don't worry
about losing visitors by having the WebRing on your front page.
Not every person surfing the WebRing will be interested in your
site and it's information - now. But they have discovered
your site through the WebRing and now know where to find you!
If you use a splash page as the entry into your site,
it is important the WebRing code be added on an internal/home
page so that those surfing the WebRing can do so easily. If
the code just will not visually fit in on your entry page, a
page that clearly describes your site's purpose, where visitors
will get an overview of what your site contains is acceptable.
NOTE: The placement of WebRing code
on "links pages" will not be acceptable. Moving
the code to another page other than the one I approve during
the registration process can cause you to be immediately removed
from the WebRing. Links pages do not clearly define you or your
site's intended purpose. If any page other than the top
entry page of your site is registered with the WebRing, when
I visit your site for inclusion I will determine if the page
registered is acceptable. If it is not, I will recommend which
page the code should be located on so that you can be added
to the WebRing.
Do
I have to place the code on my page?
Yes, without the code, your site
cannot be added to the WebRing. Please add it as soon as you
join so that there is no delay. If you truly meet all the criteria
noted above there should be no problem in approving your site.
You will receive an e-mail from me containing all of the details
and the HTML code necessary to link your page to the WebRing
immediately after you submit your join request. If you
do not maintain your own Web Site, send your Webmaster the address
of the ARRL Great Lakes Division page so they can read the instructions
on inserting the HTML code into your Web Site. You could
also forward them a copy of your sign up e-mail so they would
have the HTML code for insertion on your opening page.
Should
I contact you as soon as I join the WebRing?
This is not really necessary, as
I have the WebRing configured so that it sends me e-mail for
every new site added. I would like to hear from you as
soon as you have added the HTML to your site. That keeps me
from having to check out the WebRing management site frequently,
to see if your site is ready to be posted into the WebRing.
When your site is ready, let me know!
How
long does it take to have my site linked to the WebRing?
If all of the WebRing information
is on your page correctly, it may be added that very same day.
Keep in mind that there are times when I cannot be available
for up to a week. Although this happens infrequently,
it does happen. Also some weekends are busier than others
and you may have to wait until the first of the week if you
site was put in the queue over the weekend.
What
if my web site information or URL changes?
At the bottom of this page are
links to the WebRing site where you can edit and change your
listing information. Be sure to keep or print out the confirmation
of your WebRing submission which will contain your site's ID#
and password. You can update your information anytime by using
going to
http://www.MrRace.Com/ARRL/ The "Maintaining Your Links" box is at the very bottom of the page. If
your URL changes, I need to be notified as soon as possible.
Don't
those at the beginning of the WebRing get more exposure?
There really is no actual beginning
of the WebRing. When your site is moved from the queue to the
WebRing, you are automatically added to the top of the list.
Then, to make things interesting I have the WebRing configured
to do a complete random shuffle every 7 days. So surfers are
guaranteed a new adventure every time they hop on the ring!
Also, each Member site has a link to pull up the
complete list of those in the WebRing, making it simple to "Look
and Surf" to the next site.
Why
would I be removed from the WebRing?
The reason you would be abruptly removed from
the ARRL Great Lakes Division WebRing would be due to me receiving
complaints that the Web site owner is spamming or may be involved
in unethical practices or have unsuitable materials posted on
the web site. I reserve the right to remove any site,
at any time, for any reason I feel necessary to maintain the
reputation and quality of the WebRing. The WebRing is dedicated
to quality, ethical practices, and the commitment necessary
for a informative web site. If you are removed from the
WebRing, you will be allowed back in again at my discretion.
Any site that has to be removed a second time, will not be added to the ARRL Great Lakes Division WebRing
again.
What
is my site ID#?
Your Site ID# is a number that identifies your Web
Site to the program that runs the ARRL Great Lakes Division
WebRing. The number tells the program who is before you and
after you in the WebRing, and allows for statistics to be logged
and maintenance to the WebRing. Without your site ID#
properly placed in the WebRing code, there is no way for the
program to recognize your site.
How
do I place the ARRL Great Lakes Division WebRing on my site?
First
you need to join
the WebRing.
- Read all the information about the WebRing, it's on the page you got
here from.
- Copy and paste the
code that I generated for you in HTML to your opening web
page.
- Upload your edited
site to your service providers server and test the WebRing
code to see if it works.
- Check the links within
your browser to see if they are correct.
- Send me an e-mail
letting me know your site is ready to be added to the WebRing
- If everything is O.K.,
your site will be added shortly.
Can
I change/resize the graphics or rearrange the code that goes
along with the ring?
You must use the code as is, of course if you are
proficient with HTML, I do understand you may want to tweak
the code slightly to change the type of font or color to better
suit your page. I do require that all links
included in the code given to you remain intact and complete.
If you want
to enhance download times, you can also copy the ARRL Great
Lakes Division WebRing graphic for storage on your own server
and change the code accordingly. Changes to any of the ARRL
Great Lakes Division WebRing Graphics is strictly forbidden as they are copyright protected.
My
HTML code seems to be correct, but it does not work. What am
I doing wrong? There
must be an error in the code. Start with fresh code. Cut-n-paste
the code found at http://www.MrRace.Com/ARRL/ or in the e-mail you receive when your joined. If
you still experience problems, send me an e-mail and I will
try to help. Often I can download your page, modify
the HTML to add the WebRing, and e-mail it back to you so you
can post it back to your web page server. GRace@MrRace.Com If you need help, just ask.
I will do it as time is available.
The WebRing
seems to be dead, what's going on?
The WebRing is a very large organization with
thousands of other WebRings to distribute and maintenance. The
service is free and is always being upgraded. Also, it is possible
that, sometimes, their systems go down and that will effect
the links on millions of Web Sites -- yours is just one of them.
The webmaster of the WebRing, does his best to keep things going
smoothly.
